Waterfront Estate. Bainbridge Island.
5128 Rockaway Beach Road NE, Bainbridge Island.
The Estate at a Glance
One hundred and seven feet of Rockaway Beach shoreline. A single level of public rooms anchored to a vaulted great room, with nano doors that lift the entire west wall into the air.
Seven Frames
The nano doors lift, the great room becomes the patio, and the patio becomes the tide line. The house does not contain the Sound. The Sound contains the house.
From the Architect's Brief
The Residence
Set along the coveted shores of Rockaway Beach, the estate was designed by Roger Katz and built by Fairbank Construction, two of Bainbridge Island's most exacting hands. Timeless craftsmanship runs the seams: rich natural materials, custom millwork, limestone fireplaces, heated travertine underfoot.
The home is primarily a single-level residence. The great room rises to vaulted ceilings, opens through nano doors onto a waterfront terrace, and runs uninterrupted to the chef's kitchen. Dual islands. Premium Wolf appliances. A paneled Thermador refrigerator that disappears into the cabinetry.
The primary suite faces the water. A spa-inspired bath, an oversized walk-in, and a private patio that opens to the same beach the great room watches. A guest suite mirrors it on the opposite wing, formal but unfussy.
The media and game room is its own world. A second kitchen, a wine fridge, more nano doors. Above, a private caretaker's quarters: gym, kitchenette, ensuite bedroom, storage. A residence for a year-round life, or a summer retreat that holds its own when the leaves turn.
Five Moments
Roger Katz designed it. Fairbank Construction built it. The result is shingle-style restraint with the proportions of a Pacific Northwest lodge, sized to the cove and not to the brief.
Beamed ceilings rise above a limestone fireplace. The west wall is glass that disappears. The room reads less like a room than like a covered piece of the beach.
Spa-inspired bath, oversized walk-in closet, private waterfront patio. A bedroom that sleeps to the sound of small waves and wakes to the Seattle skyline.
A media and game room with a secondary kitchen, wine fridge, and its own set of nano doors. Built for a dinner of eight or a Fourth of July of forty.
A private caretaker's suite above the entertainment wing: gym, kitchenette, ensuite bedroom, abundant storage. Flexible for family, guests, or staff.

The Setting
Rockaway Beach sits on the southeastern shore of Bainbridge Island, a thirty-five-minute ferry from downtown Seattle. The neighborhood is residential, quiet, and oriented to the water rather than to the road.
The ferry to Colman Dock leaves from the head of the island, a ten-minute drive. Winslow's restaurants, the Bainbridge Performing Arts hall, and the island farmers market are a short loop north.
From the property line, the view sweeps east across Puget Sound to the Seattle skyline and Mount Rainier. The Olympic Mountains close in from the west. A bald eagle nest is on the next bluff over.
